Dean and Katherine Ackerman lived in an ordinary house in a typical suburb. As I pulled up out front, I sat for a minute and scanned the row of almost identical houses.

“What are you thinking?” Ben asked from the passenger seat. He’d decided to join me at the last minute, and I didn’t have the energy to argue. My twelve ghosts weren’t going anywhere…except to follow me around at a snail’s pace. If I timed it right, I could get in, speak to either of the Ackermans and get out before they turned up.

“Oh, just how…bland all the houses look. No. Not bland. Just… the same. I’d probably wander into the wrong house constantly if I lived here.”

“Affordable housing,” Ben said, following my gaze.

“Right, let’s do this.” I opened the car door and slid out. “You’ll go inside and do a recon?”

“Absolutely.” Ben walked with me to the Ackermans’ front door, but he walked right on through while I stopped to knock. I stood on the porch, waiting. And waiting. I knocked again, louder. Dean was on night shift which meant he should be home now, probably sleeping, but I didn’t have any qualms about waking him. Not if he—or his wife—was Molly’s killer.

“You can stop knocking. No one’s home.” Ben stepped through the front door, forcing me to take a rapid step backward. Big mistake. I stepped right off the porch and landed on my rear on the grass.

“Ouch.” I cursed, clambering to my feet and rubbing my stinging rump.

“Sorry! Are you okay?”

“Just another bruise to add to the collection.” It was my go-to joke whenever I took a tumble.

“Your clumsiness gets worse when you’re tired,” Ben said.

“I know.” I yawned. “Maybe I’ll take a nap and then come back here later, try the Ackermans again. I wonder where they are?”

“Katherine is probably at work,” Ben said. “But I was expecting to find Dean asleep. You said he was on night shift, along with Angela.”

“Correct. That’s what the schedule says.” It was what I’d been expecting too.

“I wonder if he’s with Angela?”

I frowned. “I doubt it. I witnessed them breaking up. And it wasn’t a show for my benefit. They didn’t know I was coming,” I quickly added when Ben opened his mouth to interrupt.

“Another girlfriend, perhaps?” Ben suggested.

“Where does he find the energy?” I yawned again and blinked. My eyes were starting to feel like I’d bathed them in sand.

“Come on, let’s get you home for that nap. You’re asleep on your feet.”

“Best idea you’ve had all day.” I’d just pulled away from the curb when my phone rang, and Galloway’s name flashed on the screen.

I punched the answer call button on my steering wheel. “Hey,” I greeted him.

“Hey,” he responded, and then I heard a ruckus in the background.

“Where are you? What’s going on?” I could hear a woman yelling but couldn’t make out the words.

“Hang on a sec. I’ll move outside.” I waited, could hear Galloway’s footsteps and other various muffled sounds as he moved away from the yelling woman.
